Mahjong is a very popular board game throughout Eastern and South Eastern Asia, played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols (Dots, Bamboos, Characters, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, Seasons.) One of the legends of the Mahjong origin suggests that Confucius developed the game in about 500 BC.

In 2005 the World Mahjong Organization (WMO) was founded in Beijing, China, with the cooperation of Japan Mahjong Organizing Committee (JMOC) and European Mahjong Association (EMA).

Mahjong or Mahjongg solitaire, and so KMahjongg on rollApp (rollapp.com/app/kmahjongg), is a matching game that uses a set of mahjong tiles rather than cards.

Game Objective

The objective of KMahjongg is to remove all the tiles off the game board by locating each tile’s matching pair as quickly as possible.

To start the game in your browser (Chrome, Firefox or Safari), click the Launch Online button:

rollApp will load a default layout of KMahjongg:

How to Play

According to the game's rules, you should carefully study the stack of tiles laid out on the game board and find two tiles matching exactly. When you have found such a pair use your mouse to select these. Once you have selected the right pair of tiles they will vanish off the game board, thus revealing the tiles previously located underneath, and opening the tiles adjacent to them. Find as many matches as possible to remove all the tiles from the game board.

  • Only the ‘open’ tiles can be selected.
  • Open’ tile is the tile which has one of the tile’s lateral sides open, meaning that no other tiles are located immediately next to it.
  • Only when matching, open tiles can be removed from the game board.
  • Matching tiles are those where the face pictograms match.
You can use the Tiles selector (Settings > Configure KMahjongg) to choose graphics for the tiles:

Today we've launched three new games on our Game Collection: a battleship, chess, and memory enhancement game. You can play them on your computer, iPad, Chromebook directly in the browser: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari.

Naval Battle is a battleship game. Ships are placed on a board which represents the sea. Players try to hit each others ships in turns without knowing where they are placed. The first player to destroy all ships wins the game.

Blinken, a memory enhancement game, is based on an electronic game released in 1978, which challenges players to remember sequences of increasing length. On the screen, there are 4 different color buttons, each one with their own distinctive sound. These buttons light up randomly, creating the sequence that the player must then recall. If the player is successful in remembering the sequence of lights in the correct order, they advance to the next stage, where an identical sequence with one extra step is presented.

Knights, the game of chess, but with the knight moves. Moving your pieces, capture your opponent’s pieces until your opponent’s king is under attack and they have no move to stop the attack.

“The only way to get smarter is by playing a smarter opponent.” ~ Fundamentals of Chess, 1883.

When you open an office app on your iPad on rollApp for the first time and then try to save or open a document, rollApp pops-up with a message saying No storage connected:

In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the process of connecting a cloud storage account – Dropbox, Google Drive or Box – to your rollApp account, so you can quickly save or open files you need.

1. You usually start from selecting an app in the App Collection or on special pages like OpenOffice or LibreOffice for iPad.

2. Once you're on the app page – let's use OpenOffice Writer for this article – click Launch Online:

3. You'll be redirected to the login page – choose the social login you prefer: Google, Facebook, Twitter or Yahoo.

You provide login credentials directly to the social login provider of your choice. rollApp does not get access to your password.

4. The app is now loading to the browser:

Shortly you'll see OpenOffice Writer on your screen, and you'll be able to work (save and open) with office documents and files.

5. But as soon as you need to open or save a file with a help of the File menu, you'll see the following message:

That's because saving and opening files requires a cloud storage service connected to your rollApp account. Well, you already have an rollApp account, remember the Step 3? We even sent you a welcome email. But what about online cloud storage? It's not yet connected. Don't panic, it's easy!

6. Let's bring the app toolbar to the game and let's use 3-finger tap for that:

7.  Once you see the toolbar, click the folder icon:

8. In a new browser window you'll be redirected to the Cloud Storage page – https://www.rollapp.com/profile/storage. Click Connect New

9. In the appeared pop-up window, select a cloud storage service, say Dropbox, and click the 'connect' link.

10. If you're not already logged to Dropbox in the same browser (Safari or Chrome), you'll be prompted to sign-in to your Dropbox account to allow the connection with rollApp. Once done, you'll see a confirmation window. Hang in there, we're almost finished!

11. Now you can switch to the browser tab where OpenOffice Writer was initially opened. IMPORTANT: it takes some time for the app to "see" the newly connected cloud storage. Therefore, before using File > Save or Open, we recommend you to wait a bit (give it a minute or so).

12. Double-tap the Dropbox folder on the saving or opening screen and you're all set.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas, please let us know.

KeePassX on rollApp is a browser-based password manager for people with high requirements for secure personal data management. SHA-256, a 256-bit cryptographically secure one-way hash function, is used as password hash in KeePassX. Browser requirements are as follows: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari.

Why You Need It

KeePassX is a powerful password generation app for fast and easy creation of secure, strong and unique passwords. If you often create passwords and need to store them in a cloud environment, across your devices, give KeePassX a try – you’ll only have to create and remember one master password.

The app is the perfect fit for the growing community of Chromebook users as rollApp allows them to securely store passwords in Google Drive (Dropbox and Box are also supported).

How It Works

KeePassX saves your passwords in a database stored in your cloud storage account (you have to connect cloud storage to your rollApp account to create, edit, and save files).

Once launched, KeePassX asks you to create a new database. By default, there are two groups in a new database: Internet and eMail. But it’s super easy to create a new category, if needed.

Secure Password Generator

While creating a new entry and generating a new password, a quality progress bar is shown above the password text box, indicating the password's strength. Please note: the generated password can be displayed or hidden, click the eye icon next to the password text box to change the view.

Once you've created your passwords, you can copy them from the app and past them into the services you need to login to.

Import & Export

Another neat feature of KeePassX is the ability to import and export passwords. The password list can be exported to various formats like TXT, HTML, XML and CSV. The CSVs can be imported by spreadsheet applications OpenOffice Calc.

More About The Encryption

The complete database is always encrypted either with AES (alias Rijndael) or Twofish encryption algorithm using a 256-bit key. You’ll be able to access to the KeePassX database either with a password, a key file or even both for better protection. The complete database is encrypted, not only the password fields.

So if you want to manage your passwords in one place, launch KeePassX in your browser.

For those who use rollApp applications and work completely in the cloud, we always recommend saving their work often to avoid losing any data.

Traditionally, rollApp users have the following options:

  • File > Save for saving their work
  • File > Exit for safely closing applications, and it also asks to save your work
But what happens if you need to put your Chromebook to sleep by closing the lid? That's interesting.

When your Chromebook is closed, rollApp keeps your apps running in your rollApp account during about 10 minutes. During that time you can re-launch the apps from you laptop or any other supported device – no worries, your work will be saved across devices – just make sure you're using the same rollApp account.

But if you wake up your Chromebook after the 10-minute interval, the app(s) will be disconnected from a rollApp server and some data won't be saved.

You can find active apps in the My running apps area. It will also show you the timer (how much time remains for a given app to be recovered), just click the app icon to re-launch it.

So, in any case, before closing the lid, always use the File > Save/As option.

Artha is a Sanskrit term meaning "purpose, cause, motive, meaning". It also refers to the idea of wealth and prosperity.

Artha is an ease-to-use thesaurus based on WordNet, the large lexical database of English, where nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets), each expressing a distinct concept, in other words, they are linked semantically.

About WordNet

WordNet's structure makes it a useful tool for computational linguistics and natural language processing.

WordNet superficially resembles a thesaurus, in that it groups words together based on their meanings. But there are some distinctions. First, WordNet interlinks not just word forms—strings of letters—but specific senses of words. As a result, words that are found in close proximity to one another in the network are semantically disambiguated. Second, WordNet labels the semantic relations among words, whereas the groupings of words in a thesaurus does not follow any explicit pattern other than meaning similarity.

While sipping your morning coffee, an email with an unknown file has arrived into your inbox on iPad from a friend in Denmark. The friend is asking you to proofread her resume ASAP. No problemo, but unexpectedly Google Drive tells that the file cannot be viewed. Ouch!

So how can you view the document on iPad? How to save it to your iPad in an easily accessible way? Maybe convert it to the .doc format but, again, how?

You're starting to panic. Your coffee is getting cold.

And what if there’s not only a .doc file you ever need to open, but files of other formats like .ods, .csv or .rtf – how to quickly preview them?

You go to refill your coffee and notice that there are still more croissants. You grab them all.

Your adrenaline is up and suddenly you think to yourself: "iPad is such a magical device and you’re living in the age of technology so there’s MUST be a solution to that problem." And you’re right!

The conventional wisdom tells us that we cannot read a file without an app that is compatible with that file. That's false for the cloud computing era.

To view and edit office docs on your iPad all you need is a browser and rollApp.com.

As the iPad doesn't have a file system, rollApp allows you to work with files (open, save, edit) directly in your Google Drive, Dropbox, or Box account. So if you want to view a document – that resume from your friend – just create your rollApp account and connect your favorite cloud storage to it.

Then, using Chrome or Safari, go to an office app on rollApp.com – for example LibreOffice Writer or OpenOffice Writer, click Launch Online, use File > Open to locale the file you previously saved in your cloud storage. And you're all set!

Below are just some major file formats you can open and view with OpenOffice apps via rollApp on your iPad:

Text documents:
OpenDocument formats (.odt, .ott, .oth, and .odm):
Microsoft Word 6.0/95/97/2000/XP (.doc and .dot)

Microsoft Word 2007 XML (.docx, .docm, .dotx, .dotm)
Microsoft WinWord 5 (.doc)
WordPerfect Document (.wpd)

The goal of rollApp is to help people be more productive using a web browser, no matter what hardware they are running.

Surprisingly, during Fall 2013, we've received many new requests, especially from the growing number of Chromebook users, to update our cloud-based Game Collection. You've asked, we've listened. Starting today, in addition to popular and well-recommended games like Mahjongg, GLines, Gweled, and Tanglet, you can play three more games right in your browser.

Hangman
The origins of Hangman are obscure, but it seems to have arisen in Victorian times. In the game, the player should guess a word letter by letter. At each miss, the picture of a hangman appears. After 10 tries, if the word is not guessed, the game is over and the answer is displayed.

Mastermind
Mastermind is a code-breaking game for two players. The goal of this game is to break a hidden color code following the hints that the game gives us.

Tali
Tali is a sort of poker with dice and less money. You roll five dice three times and try to create the best hand. Your two re-rolls may include any or all of your dice.

Browser-based Inkscape is an incredibly useful vector graphics editor available on rollApp's cloud (enjoy drawing on iPad) and in the Chrome Web Store (perfect for Chromebook owners). It's used in many different ways from creative art and web graphics to technical diagrams and navigation development.

If you are used to working with Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw, Inkscape comes with similar capabilities and uses the Scalable Vector Graphics file format supporting many advanced SVG features: markers, clones, alpha blending.

Still, the application is more focused on popular vector graphics editing capabilities, including transparency, gradients, node editing, and pattern fills.

Inkscape stores its graphics in a vector format but it also can import and display bitmap images. For working with files – right through your browser – you'll able to connect your rollApp account to Google Drive, Dropbox and Box.

Alice Keeler, an adjunct professor of CSU Fresno, Microsoft Innovative Educator Trainer and Google Certified Teacher, recently posted an awesome series of articles about Google Chrome extensions that can help teachers in the classroom. And in the latest post – 5 Chrome Extensions for Teachers: Part 3 – she reviewed rollApp File Opener. Thanks for sharing, Alice, glad you liked it! Let us cross-post your findings here.

rollApp File Opener

I am constantly downloading resources from the web. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to download a resource before you can see if it is any good. You can view it of course after you figure out where the heck it downloaded to. RollApp does not fully solve this problem, but it is a huge help.

After installing the extension look for the little blue cloud icon near the omnibox. If a webpage has documents that can be downloaded you are able to click on this icon to reveal a list of all the documents that can be downloaded. In the below example I did a Google search for worksheets on the pythagorean theorem.

After clicking on one of the choices from the list of options RollApp launches a viewer in a floating window to allow me to preview the document. This saved me from finding the download links on the page, figuring out where the document downloaded to and then waiting for the Word program to launch. If you do not have office on your computer this will help immensely since the RollApp viewer is it’s own application and does not require Office to be installed on your computer.

When you launch an online application on rollApp, you have several choices where your files will be saved or opened from. Box, an online file storage, is one of those choices.

Box allows you to store all kinds of files online and provides access to all your content, right in the browser. For a personal free account, Box offers 10GB secure storage with 250MB file upload size. Nice!

So if you're a Box personal or enterprise user who considers working with the App Collection on rollApp, here's how to get started:

Go to the Cloud Storage section of your account – rollapp.com/profile/storage – and click Connect New.

In the appeared drop-down list, select Box, change the default folder name if needed, and then click Connect.

You’ll redirected on Box.com where you need to log into your Box account. For this, enter your email and password, and click Log In.

Once done, you'll redirected back to rollApp.com where you'll see a congratulation message. And that's pretty much it – your rollApp account can now work with the files you store in the Box's cloud.

Now, if you need to save or open a file using an office or graphics app on rollApp, use the File > Save As menu command, name the file and indicate the path to your Box folder:

On the next screen, also click Save

Once a file is saved, you can find it in the All Files and Folders area of your Box account.
